Trauma Therapy in Atlanta, GA

You find yourself surrounded by chaos, memories of past trauma and it leaves you feeling anxious all the time for no reason and you don’t know why. You are having panic attacks every day which seems so random. You can’t figure out what is triggering them while desperately wishing they would stop.

That feeling of being unable to breathe seems to never leave you. You wake up every day with a sense of dread. You feel emotionally scared all the time. You jump at every noise you hear. You feel so lost and don’t know what to do, as you begin to wonder if you’re crazy. You are desperate to find someone to help you feel normal.

Trauma therapy in Atlanta can help you find real change.

Your relationships are suffering. You’re snapping at those you love. What happened has left you nervous and afraid to get into any relationship. You feel anxious and suspicious about the motives of the person who talks to you in the grocery store, the one who says hello as you walk past them on the street, and even the one who smiles at you, so you stop going out. You’re terrified the same thing will happen all over again. So you begin to question the motives of everything other people do.

You push friends and family away to isolate yourself. Tiny things set you off and it seems like everything is a big deal and the emotions of it all are dominating your life. You feel as though you will never be free of this.

Every day is filled with tears. Everything reminds you of what happened even watching TV and you start crying again. The relentless anxiety leaves you feeling like you are dying. Sometimes you even find yourself hoping you could stop existing. You feel hopeless anything will change and powerless to do anything about it. Anxiety and depression have become your constant companions in the aftermath of your trauma. You need help!

Hi, I’m Kristy! I’m a trauma therapist in Atlanta and I can help!

For over 15 years, I have been helping trauma survivors overcome the aftermath created by what happened to them. Trauma can leave us with beliefs about ourselves that are inaccurate and painful. I have training in gentler forms of trauma treatment methods that allow us to change faulty thinking about what happened and ultimately decrease your distress.

I use a composition of several body therapies to help the body release the trauma and allow the nervous system to learn to relax. Once the body is able to release the trauma, my clients are able to start learning to trust themselves in determining who in their lives is trustworthy and who is not. I help clients identify and detach from triggers that bring out the negative effects of trauma. High levels of anxiety come down as clients learn how to feel safe in their environment.

As a trauma therapist, I see clients learning to be emotionally vulnerable at a pace they are comfortable with in a safe space without judgment or criticism. The sense of powerlessness dissipates as I help clients practice assertive communication and learn to set healthy boundaries of protection with unhealthy people they have been repeatedly harmed by. My clients are able to embody an inner strength and a new sense of control in their lives as they begin to find their voice.

Frequently Asked Questions about Trauma Therapy in Atlanta, GA

The aftermath of trauma can be difficult to deal with and can have impacts on many parts of your life. I am here to help!

  • A trauma therapist has more experiences and training in treating trauma and use techniques and strategies to help you heal from the effects of trauma.

  • Fatigue and body aches are the most common sign the body is releasing trauma. This can be addressed by giving yourself time to rest after a session that involves releasing trauma from the body.

  • Sessions typically last between 45 and 50 minutes in length.

  • You will be in therapy for longer if you are not attending weekly therapy sessions! You will see improvements in your life faster and be able to maintain change longer!

From tracking outcomes, I know that clients who attend weekly sessions are getting better faster. Research has also found that weekly therapy sessions bring improvement faster. Doing healing work at the level that will sustain long-term change takes time. It’s a commitment. Clients who invest time get better faster and experience less relapse into old patterns. Faster results with less relapse mean you will spend less time and money on therapy overall.

  • There are a lot of factors that contribute to the length of therapy, so it is difficult to predict until we begin working together. If we decide we’re a good fit following that initial meeting, we’ll check in on progress every single week.

Typically, clients I work with start seeing changes after 6 weeks of weekly sessions. At the end of 12 weeks, we’ll evaluate if we’re reaching our goals. Often, the challenges that initiated their search for a therapist have been resolved after 12 weeks, if not sooner. All have been pleased with their progress and decided to continue making changes in their lives with new goals.

The decision to end our work together will be a collaborative decision based on what you feel needs to change in your life and the changes I see happening for you.

  • I have partnered with Mentaya to help you save money on therapy. If you have out-of-network benefits, Mentaya will handle everything with insurance to make sure you get your money back. They only charge a 5% fee per claim and have helped people get thousands of dollars back per year. You can read more about how Mentaya works to help you reduce the cost of therapy here.

  • Online! No need to fight Atlanta traffic to get to a therapist’s office anymore. I am right here on your computer screen! As long as you are physically located in Georgia at the time of the session and in a place where you can have privacy, you get to make that “near me” location wherever is most convenient for you.

  • This has rarely happened, but if we do not see some improvement after a month of working together, we will change our approach to ensure we’re really targeting the things we need to target. If we’re still not seeing any improvement, we want to look at potentially referring you to another therapist who would be a better fit for you, a parenting coach, or an outside resource.

  • I know it can feel scary to call a therapist, and you might still have questions. I’ll make it easy. We’ll spend 15 minutes on the phone, and I’ll let you know how or if I can help. If I am not the right person, I’ll do my best to get you to the right person. Click here to contact me today.
